Who ate all the pies?
As a Kiwi growing up in NZ, I’ve been fortunate to have access to a wide variety of delicious pies. Since I moved to Melbourne, I’m constantly searching for pies that can capture that authentic Kiwi pie experience. And from my school memories. I’m always craving and have yet to replicate the sausage roll or mince & cheese pie in a buttered roll with sauce.
Here’s a map of some I’ve tried and some that have been highly recommended. If you have any additional suggestions, please feel free to share them:
Essential Kiwi Classic Pies
- Steak and Cheese Pies: These classic Kiwi pies are a must-try, featuring chunky tender steak filling with cheese.
- Mince and Cheese Pie: A quintessential Kiwi favourite, this pie consists of flavorful mince (ground meat) with a generous layer of melted cheese throughout.
- Steak and Mushroom Pie: A hearty pie with tender chunks of steak and earthy mushrooms, often in a rich gravy.
- Butter Chicken Pie: For a unique twist on the traditional, try a butter chicken pie, combining the flavours of this popular Indian dish with the Kiwi pie format.
- Seafood Pies: If you’re a fan of seafood, don’t miss out on the seafood pies filled with a variety of local catch, such as mussels, white fish, and crayfish.
- Pies with Unique Flavors: Some bakeries get creative with their pie fillings, offering options like lamb and mint, venison, or even Thai green curry pies. These can be a delightful surprise for your taste buds.
- Sausage Rolls: While not technically pies, Kiwi sausage rolls are a beloved snack, featuring seasoned sausage meat wrapped in flaky pastry.
Remember, the key to finding the best Kiwi pies is to explore your local bakeries, cafes, and food establishments. Kiwi expat communities often have hidden gems that serve authentic New Zealand-style pies. Feel free to share your recommendations and discoveries with fellow Kiwis to keep the pie-loving community thriving.
