Fun little project to get some nostalgia into the living room. If you already have a suitable powercord, Micro SD card and game controller – you can build this system for as little as $50 AUD.
Here is what you need.
Required
- Raspberry Pi
- SD Card
- Micro USB Power Supply
- Case
- Game Controllers
- HDMI Cable
- Software
Raspberry Pi
This is the micro PC that will run the software. You can buy for approx $50 AUD link
Micro SD Card
A Class 10 Micro SD Card is required to store the software and games, the Raspberry PI supports SD Cards up to 64GB
Micro USB Power Supply
The Raspberry Pi is powered by a Micro USB port. The Pi needs at least 5 volts and 2.5amps – so most USB phone charges might not have enough grunt. So check the specs, or get the offical power supply link
Case/Enclosure
You will need a case to hold your Raspberry Pi. Lots of options and pricing from $4 to $32, including the official Pi case link
Or go full Nostalgia with nespi case
Game Controllers
Lots of options for controllers. The Raspberry Pi 3 has bluetooth built in so you can use a range of wireless controllers including most generic bluetooth controllers along with PlayStation 3 & 4, xbox30, wiimote and also supports USB controllers.
If your matching the Nespi case – check out the 8bitdo range here
HDMI
Raspberry Pi has a standard full size HDMI port – so standard cord is all that is needed
Software
This is where the fun starts, lots of options here. My preference is RetroPie – checkout RetroPie
